The VW Passat B4 (Type 3A) is a model of the middle class of Volkswagen. It was introduced in autumn 1993 as successor to the VW Passat B3. It is not a completely new vehicle, but a comprehensive development of the Passat B3. The car was produced between October 1993 and May 1997 in the VW factory Emden. In October 1996, the B4 sedan was replaced by the successor VW Passat B5, the variant followed six months later. As a further development of the B3, the Passat B4 differed in numerous details but was based essentially on the previous model. Modifications were made to design and technology. The model maintenance was more conservatively oriented, the car should look more conventional again since the predecessor with the cool-grilled front was perceived by many buyers as too radical. The B4 now had a real radiator grille, the so-called "Happy Face" grille, instead of the single round "nose hole" with the front VW emblem. The front turn signals were integrated into the bumpers. The longitudinal bead on the body flank above the door handles has been eliminated. Also, the rear of the car was visually revised. So the B4 has larger taillights and a revised rear door. On the body side, the sometimes poor finish of the last generation was improved. The seats received new covers and the fittings new switches and dials.

As far as it was possible within the framework of a facelift, the Passat was brought to the then state of the safety technology. When, as a result of the accident tests initiated by the magazine "Auto, Motor und Sport", the demands for the standard installation of airbags became ever louder, Volkswagen was one of the first mass manufacturers to develop an airbag for vehicles of medium and compact class ". This had already been offered optionally in the Passat B3 since 1992. In the Passat B4, it was now available in Germany as standard with a passenger front airbag. In addition, the Passat was equipped as standard with ABS, side impact protection, and pyrotechnic belt pre-tensioners. Another drawback, the hake liege cable pulling off the predecessor model (actually borrowed technique from the golf), was replaced by a revised variant. In model B4, Volkswagen used a TDI engine for the first time, an electronically controlled diesel engine with direct injection. The engine had four cylinders, 1.9 liters displacement and was introduced at the same time also in the then golf. Technically, it represents a further development of the 2.5-liter five-cylinder TDI engine presented in the Audi 100 in 1989, was installed in the Passat across the direction of travel and, in contrast to the five-cylinder engine, had an air mass meter for the first time. At the TDI, the great demand initially led to long delivery times. The engine performed 66 kW (90 hp) and had a torque of 202 Nm at 1900 rpm. Towards the end of the production period of the B4 (during the 1996 model year), it was supplemented by a more powerful variant with 81 kW (110 hp). This was recognizable from the outside by a red flag on the right in the TDI lettering. The strong diesel engine had a turbocharger with a variable turbine geometry and achieved a torque of 235 Nm at 1900 rpm.
